Chapter I
In Which the Author Introduces Herself & Her Intentions
First and most importantly, thanks for signing up for my newsletter! Make sure you’ve received your free copy of “The Flicker in White” as my token of gratitude to subscribers. (That’s right, if you volunteer to read my writing, I will inevitably throw even more of my writing at you!)
But where are my manners? Or my inverted pyramid? Let’s dive in.
Who: Hi! I’m Nancy, but some of you may know me as NJ Knight. I’m a journalist-turned-novelist with a particular love for the horror genre. My first short story was published in 2023, and I began querying my YA historical fantasy novel, Hameln, in October.
But this newsletter won’t just be about me. I also want to introduce you to the friends and enemies I’ve made along the way. (Just kidding about the enemies part. Or am I? Act accordingly.)
What: The mortifying ordeal of making myself known, also known as a newsletter about creativity and community. That said, as the title suggests, my interests tend to be eclectic, so brace yourselves.
Where: Right here in your inbox!
When: The fifteenth of every month, give or take a particularly rowdy weekend.
Why: Ah, here’s what you’re really here for!
I discovered during the process of writing my first book that it is incredibly isolating. Typing away in a room, having imaginary conversations with fictional characters isn’t the best way to find your people, actually! My goal here is to invite others who may feel lost or lonely in their own creative process along for the ride.
And, you know, I’ll throw in some news about my writing sometimes, too!
How: Everything I write here will inevitably be formed by my own experiences finding my community and craft. I’ve often heard that no publishing story is the same; I think that extends to the artistic process at large. Please take whatever you find useful here, but don’t hesitate to throw out the rest. Discover what works for you, friend.
And One More Thing: Rosé’s Rosie
I intend to end my monthly missives with something that’s brought me a bit of joy recently. That’s Blackpink’s Rosé and her debut solo album released last month, Rosie. Rosé has an astonishing voice and she’s showcased it brilliantly with a deft collection of torch songs that somehow sound entirely personal and universal at once.
Listen to singles “APT.” and “Number One Girl,” at least — delve deeper with “Two Years” and “Too Bad for Us” if you like what you hear.

Love this! Can’t wait to read more :)
